COLOMBO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Workers' remittances to Sri Lanka exceeded 5 billion U.S. dollars in the first eight months of 2025, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) said in its latest report.

According to the CBSL, inflows reached 5.11 billion dollars from January to August, marking a 19.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year, when the figure stood at 4.28 billion dollars.

In August alone, remittances amounted to 680.8 million dollars, the data showed.

Meanwhile, official figures also indicate that Sri Lanka's tourism sector continues to recover, with earnings surpassing 2 billion dollars during the January-July period, up 7.8 percent over the corresponding period of 2024.

Tourism earnings and workers' remittances remain among the country's top sources of foreign exchange.
