COLOMBO, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will renovate schools that can be restored quickly and relocate those in high-risk areas to safer locations following an assessment of damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said on Wednesday.
The prime minister made the remarks after inspecting a school in the Badulla District of Uva Province damaged by the cyclone.
She said the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNICEF, would take the necessary steps to ensure the safe resumption of schooling.
The prime minister also directed authorities to identify preschools that can no longer function due to cyclone-related damage and to ensure that teachers attached to those institutions continue to receive their allowances.
Over 1,300 schools were affected by Cyclone Ditwah in Central and Uva Provinces.
