COLOMBO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to conduct an economic census in two stages, according to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information on Tuesday.

The census will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase focusing on agricultural activities in 2025, and the second phase, covering non-agricultural activities, scheduled for 2026, the statement said.

The last Economic Census conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) took place in 2013/14, the department noted.

The DCS said the Economic Census serves as a primary source of essential data on the nature, structure, and performance of economic activities carried out within the country's territory.
