Sri Lanka sees 1 mln hospitalizations annually from road accidents

COLOMBO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- About a million hospitalizations take place in Sri Lanka each year due to road accidents, said the health authority on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at the Health Promotion Bureau, Samitha Siritunga, a specialist attached to the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health, said the number of hospitalizations will increase by another 200,000-300,000 in the coming 5-10 years.

Siritunga said the majority of hospitalizations in state hospitals are due to road accidents, and the state has to incur substantial costs to treat those injured.
