Sri Lanka to provide 2,500 urban housing units for low-income families in Colombo

COLOMBO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will provide 2,500 urban housing units to low-income and permanently homeless families in 2026 in Colombo, local media reported on Tuesday, quoting Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara.

Gunasekara said three housing schemes are scheduled to be handed over this year, and authorities plan to deliver 7,000 new urban housing units in Colombo over the next two years.

He said residents tend to act more responsibly when they are given adequate facilities, the report added.

In total, the Sri Lankan government plans to construct 31,218 houses across various provinces under its 2026 national housing program, which has a key focus on houses for low-income families.
