NAVAL, Biliran, Nov. 13 (PIA) - A total of 800 farmers from Naval, the capital town of Biliran, availed of the Department of Agriculture's (DA) Survival and Recovery Assistance Program or SURE Aid program.
The amount of P15,000 each was released via Land Bank of the Philippines cash cards/ATM cards in October to qualified farmers who are members of registered organizations and own one hectare and below rice-land, said Shirley Jadulco, Naval municipal agriculture officer.
Jadulco said their office only accepted and processed the farmers' applications to avail of the P15,000 loan at zero interest payable in eight years.
Payment of the interest-free loan starts six months after release at P1,000 every six months or P2,000 a year at the LBP, according to Jadulco.
The SURE Aid Program is the government's response to assist farmer's due to the low buying price of palay and high cost of rice farming in the country.
Moreover, the Naval Municipal Agriculture Office continuously distributes palay seeds to farmers with model farms in Brgy.Sto. Nino to cover some 20 hectares of rice-land, Jadulco added.
Meanwhile, the agriculture sector is also currently challenged with the spread of the African Swine Fever affecting local hog raisers. # (nbq/mlt/PIA8 Biliran)
