Colombo, Feb.9 : Sri Lanka's former Chief of Defence Staff, army chief and opposition presidential candidate, General (retired) Sarath Fonseka, was forcibly detained after objecting to his arrest by army personnel, news agencies report.

General (retired) Fonseka had to be hauled from his office after he was charged with planning to overthrow the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the head of the army with the help of army deserters and former military officers.

General (retired) Fonseka has termed the charges as fabricated.

He said the government was attempting to arrest him on trumped up charges.

Last week, security forces raided his office and arrested at least 15 of his staff.

Many in Sri Lanka feel that his arrest is politically- motivated.
