General says Aung San Suu Kyi could be released
Sri Lankan News.Net Saturday 24th October, 2009
Myanmar officials have supposedly indicated restrictions may be eased on opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest in the country.
There have been reports that Southeast Asian leaders spoke to Myanmar prime minister, General Thein Sein, at a meeting of ASEAN on the weekend and were told restrictive measures against Aung San Suu Kyi could be relaxed, depending on her attitude.
Earlier this month, Aung San Suu Kyi discussed her house arrest with the Myanmar military government.
After the meeting, she was given permission to meet US, Australian and British diplomats.
Aung San Suu Kyi has in the past supported international sanctions against Myanmar as a form of pressure against the military regime, in order to get them to restore democracy.
She recently said she would be more willing to work with the government to have sanctions lifted.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been held under detention for 14 of the past 20 years.
