Deadly weekend in Afghanistan sees 13 U.S. troops die
Sri Lankan News.Net Sunday 4th October, 2009
Eight U.S. soldiers, and 7 members of Afghan military forces, were killed Saturday when militants from a local village swamped two remote military outposts near the Pakistan border.
The attack, one of the deadliest of the eight-year war, brought the death toll of U.S. soldiers killed since Friday to thirteen.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack which involved some 300 militants equipped with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades storming the outposts. Gunfights lasted several hours and coalition troops fought to defend their posts. They were eventually overrun.
U.S. air strikes, artillery, and helicopter gunships provided cover for the posts and inflicted heavy casualties. Fifteen Afghan police who came to the aid of the coalition, including the local police chief and his deputy were captured by the militants. One police officer was among the seven Afghan forces killed.
The eight U.S. soldiers killed were all from Fort Carson's 4th Brigade Combat Team. They had been serving in Afghanistan for five months.
"This was a complex attack in a difficult area," U.S. Col. Randy George, the area commander, said in a statement. "Both the U.S. and Afghan soldiers fought bravely together."
Elsewhere, In three separate incidents, five U.S soldiers were killed Friday.
One U.S. service member was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated in eastern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force said in a statement released Sunday.
Two U.S. service members were killed in another improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan, the statement said.
In another incident two U.S. service members were killed in a hostile attack in eastern Afghanistan, the ISAF statement added. Email this story to a friend

Thirteen U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan
We as Americans need to see this through. One life was to many. But this isn’t something we started. They came to this country and killed without careing about who was in the buildings they cause to fall. Now we have to finish what they started. Yes more blood will be shead. But blood is all we can give for those that have already fallen. God guide our hands as we defend this the greatest of all country’s.

You win some you lose some
War is a very dirty game, many people do get killed, and this is part of the war game.
How many innocent people have been killed in this useless war that was started by incomptent leaders.
We call it a war for the freedom of the Afghani people, against oppression, and this is true, but we must ask ourselves do these Afghani want to be free of their traditional culture which imposes to them these abuses?
I ask: This war should not be a war that uses force to try and establish cultural changes, but instead it should be a war of education, where these people would be exposed to the outside world, so that they for themselves would eventually adapt to change their culture ways through the outside influence of other cultures.
But it seems that, many countries for the sake of consuming their war materials promote wars to dominate others through the use of force, where many innocent lives are always lost.
And in my opinion all lives lost in conflicts are innocent, and there is no difference between any and foe, they are lives that are being lost needlessly.

A sense of deja vu. The USA playing world police and the locals as bad guys.
When will they ever learn. In places like this, changes in culture, education, religion, beliefs, are very, very slow. I think the Brits were there a hundred years ago, and you can judge the changes.
The Ruskies were there too. Now the UN, NATO,USA and Canada think they can bring the tribal and rural Afghans to the 21st century complete with western values on human rights, justice, etc.
Many have tried and failed. The USA will not be the last one.
I am sorry for the troops who died they thought they were fighting a noble cause.

Two posts offend my understandings greatly...
While 'games' are played in wars, 'War' is no game! Though some wars have a side declare they won, there are no winners. All loose, just the amount of loss varies.
Why do some posters wake up only with 9/11/2001???
Is this the day they learn to talk and walk? They act like new babies in knowledge! Or are they simply dishonest!

Dear Yankees!
Afghan or Pakistan people did not do anything to you even if they did, regular indigenous people are not responsible for your security rather insecurities and paranoia. Those who committed the acts are persihed. They never lived in Afghan. They were in Germany and lived in the US and trained there. If you are against people of the mudhouses, then there something wrong with you. Planning and carrying out

Will never declare withdrawal from Afghanistan till ....
Long term stay of American, allies and UN will give negative feelings to Afghanis. America will never declare his withdrawal from Afghanistan unless and untill he attack upon PAKISTAN.
Now relations between INDIA and CHINA too are getting hard, this is a critical time to think for ASIAN neighbours to get united for the cause of humanity. INDIA,CHINA and PAKISTAN must think upon the present situation and must co operate within each other.
